Virginia Cancer Physicians Support Governor Spanberger’s Veto to Protect Patient Access to Care

The Virginia Association of Hematologists and Oncologists (VAHO) applauded Governor Abigail Spanberger’s veto of HB 483 and SB 271, stating that her decision reflects a prudent recognition that the system for acquiring and delivering cancer medications is complex and highly sensitive to policy changes.

“The Governor thoughtfully reviewed the underlying policy, relying on the input of healthcare experts in the field, including those delivering specialized care for patients,” said Dr. Richard Ingram, President of the Virginia Association of Hematologists and Oncologists. “As physicians on the front lines of cancer care in communities across Virginia, we are grateful that she listened to those concerns.”

While drug affordability is a genuine and significant concern, this legislation risked creating unintended consequences that could have limited access to critical, lifesaving medications, reduced treatment options for patients, and destabilized the delivery of cancer care in Virginia. Patients facing serious illnesses deserve timely access to the therapies their physicians believe are best for their care — without added barriers, delays, or uncertainty.

VAHO strongly supports efforts to lower healthcare costs for Virginia patients and families, but believes such efforts must be carefully designed to preserve access to high‑quality, evidence‑based care. The association looks forward to continued collaboration with the Governor and policymakers to develop meaningful, sustainable cost‑reduction strategies that do not sacrifice the care our patients deserve.
